"My father read newspapers and books every day, for hours and hours. His library grew gradually over the years, following his interests, which ranged from philosophy to literature, history to theatre, art to poetry, and from politics to sociology and psychoanalysis.

When I grew up and began looking at these walls lined with books, I took down a book to read. The next day the book had disappeared from my room and had been replaced with a new edition. My father’s copy had returned to its place on the shelf.

My father suffered if someone “touched” his books, and if my mother or I took something he didn’t say anything. He would run into the library to give us the book we wanted..."
