"Diaries can be fascinating, for they provide an informal way of collecting first impressions, which then may be incorporated into polished writing. I met Maria at a museum show in Dublin, for which I wrote the catalogue. Now, teaching in Beijing on the American Fulbright-Luce program I write this little diary for Maria. Venice, I grant is far away from Beijing, but if Marco Polo could come here overland, then this little fragment of my diary can make its way electronically, so much more swiftly! to Maria’s computer..."
