The conveyor crack

Project for Casa Scatturin / Cagnoli Barcella

Work description and interpretation
The work was commissioned by Maria Cagnoli for her house in Venice: Carlo Scarpa’s “Casa Scatturin” consists of a work in Plasticine on the wall, an audio track in which I read a letter sent to the client and a diary of colours that I painted during the period in which – in order harmonise with the project – I studied a painting by Tancredi housed at the Ca’ Pesaro Museum in Venice. The project takes into consideration the client’s wishes and the fact that the house was designed by Carlo Scarpa, that it was Luigi Scatturin’s home and that Tancredi had also spent time there. I looked for places in the home where I would not be too invasive, inserting myself into the spaces made by a crack and hiding myself behind a piece of furniture designed by Scarpa. A Plasticine painting, stratified in the studio with my colours (in response to Tancredi’s), was then sectioned into small strips and placed in the wall vertically in a long strip. It became the stucco that repaired the crack almost as if the pictorial gesture had become the element for healing a wound. I then added a more private and intimate part, which was the letter to the owner of the house. I decided to send it in audio form rather than on paper in order to add my voice to the space. I chose audio rather than video in order not to be present with the image of my body. What remains is the gesture of a presence in the space, of a discrete passing through that house.
