OUTSIDE THE PAINTING
For the window of the Women’s Bookshop in Milan: a meeting point and place for thinking.
How to convey one’s own emotiveness to others?
How to convey one’s own intimacy in a shared discussion?
I put the sheet of plastic I use to protect the white wall from my canvases in the window. The splattered colours outside the edges of the canvas leave traces of the act of painting.
There is a membrane between the inside and the outside, between the public thoroughfare and bookshop’s interior, which is a space for meeting. In front of the membrane-screen is a painted canvas which suggests the actual situation in my studio, while the transparency of the shop window fosters an inside-outside circularity.
What lies outside the painting? What goes inside the canvas?
What lies around it is more important than what lies within it. Life precipitates inside the painting.
