Introduction

DOUBLING

PROCEEDING ALONG TWO PARALLEL LINES

“Two people of the same sex and the same name”
Susan Sontag 24 August 1961

The “Doubles” are a sort of filiation of other works.
You reach a point in which the main action produces another one in parallel, in which the road separates and time develops along two roads which run contemporaneously.
In some cases the gesture is no longer unique and absolute, but is replicated and moves forward on two fronts. Like a double life which runs parallel to the other one.

GIVING LIFE TO A DOUBLET
The path continues in linear fashion one day after the next in a single concentrated place.
The thought digs deeper inside in a visceral and vertical awareness. Everything, moved by a power, pushes towards the internal, towards the centre of itself, of one’s own body.
The route happens in a precise place that looks at itself and looks again in a total in-depth analysis that reaches the point of obsession.
Then, at a certain point, propelled by a concrete need, this centripetal force changes direction, a pinhole opens and a new energy is fired outwards, a magmatic substance that – rearranging itself – goes on to create a second part the same as the first.
The original form is doubled, the single point of view becomes dual. Two pathways now run in parallel and are reciprocally informed, each nourishing the other. The centrality of individuality has been lost. The generating place is no longer unique and absolute, but reproducible. From being a single and exclusive subject, the work has been transformed into a relative and partial one. Relativising its originality has opened up the possibility that things can continue to change and regenerate.
