Attesting

Legislating: regulating what is inside with what lies outside the archive

It’s important for me never to accept things as they come to me, as they are imposed on me by a predetermined structure. I have always felt that it is essential to create the physical and mental space in which to carry out reality myself, in which to make my life flow. I have tried to define the perimeters and ways personally, starting from the format in which I make my painterly gesture right up to the device-site through which I recount my version of the facts.

Now, here in this paragraph I would like to deal with the question of the definition of some rules regarding the archive. I would like to try to explain how I tried to fix my rules and explain them to the outside and say how I imagined the relationship between me, my works and their future owners.
I consider the archive a guarantor, the place where an entire series of concepts merge which express the way I relate to what I do and as such are the means that help me to portray myself to the outside.
It is not so much about juridical questions shared by any artist’s archive that I want to talk about, so much as those tools I have invented to say what I am hoping for when it comes to the relationship that the new owners can have with what I do. What I mean to say is the responsibility that we share: me, the artist, and you, the new custodians, in choosing what to give importance to, and what to give value to.
I am speaking of the two attachments to the authenticity certificate, the texts ‘The Owner as Witness’ and ‘The Owner as Archivist’ which I wrote to say that paradoxically the archiving of the work is more important than the work itself. I have added them here below as attachments.

I would like to make two things clear. The first is that, as I have continued to repeat in every chapter of this book-self-portrait, this being a system in constant movement it will obviously always be open to change. Some statements I have made thus far could be contradicted at any time or I could reinforce them exaggeratedly in the future. The other thing I want to make clear is that I do not impose anything on others, that everything I say, everything I ask for through my words is merely a hoped-for pact, a desire, a utopia of how the world could be handled together. These are just indications of how to safeguard something I strongly believe in, but this wishful thinking only has meaning if it is shared by others. Otherwise, never mind, it’s fine. I am going to leave it up to others to interpret what I have explicated.
